Dentist with Special Interest in Prevention, Periodontics and Pre-Orthodontic Treatment
I was born in the U.S.A, but spent a memorable childhood in the sunshine of Kenya. After completing my Dental degree from Barts and The Royal London in U.K, I delved into Preventative Care in Dentistry. Always believing that prevention is better than cure, I was motivated to enhance my skills as a minimal intervention Dentist and practice efficient and effective Oral Hygiene techniques. My passion outweighed everything and I found myself loving the results of great hygiene instruction, excellent stain removal and happy, healthy patients. My love for Periodontics allowed me to work alongside specialists in the field and this allowed me the opportunity to work with advanced cases, and see exceptional, satisfying results in clinical practice. I advocate a gentle experience with hygiene, my philosophy is that prevention should not be painful, rather an enjoyable accomplishment rewarded with wellbeing.
Working with children has always been somewhat of a joy to me. Their innocence, and our ability as Clinicians to remove stigmas of fear, and introduce fun, genuine smiles has been at the forefront of my interests. When I was introduced to the Australian MyoBrace® system, I immediately knew that this preventive pre-orthodontic treatment that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of crooked teeth, often without the need for braces or extraction of teeth, unlocking natural growth and development- was groundbreaking and desperately needed. Becoming a trained MyoBrace® practitioner, and helping children and adults correct their soft tissue discrepancies has been a victory in prevention for me.
Alongside this I found myself exploring Aesthetic Medicine with my belief system that when you get positive responses in life your individuality begins to come through as you become more aware of your potential and how to tap in to it. Trained by the Dr. Bob Khanna Training Institute, for the ultimate in Facial Aesthetics with advanced accreditation as a Botox Administrator, I have also completed a post-graduate certification and was awarded a diploma with the prestigious and international American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. Looking good is about feeling good to me, and there is nothing more important than your inner peace and happiness.
My interests in holistic care, led way to my hobbies in Reiki, Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Hypnotherapy. I enjoy travelling and embracing new cultures, and my babies and family are the centre of my world.
The Myobrace® System
The Myobrace® System is preventive pre-orthodontic treatment that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of crooked teeth, often without the need for braces or extraction of teeth, unlocking natural growth and development.
What does the Myobrace® treatment do?
- Corrects poor oral habits
- Develops & aligns the jaws
- Straightens the teeth
- Optimises facial development
- Improves overall health
- Promotes healthy eating habits
How does it do this?
By helping the child:
- Breathe through the nose
- Correct tongue resting position
- Swallow correctly
- Keep the lips together
What are the types of poor oral habits?
- Thumb/finger/pacifier sucking
- Open mouth posture
- Habitual mouth breathing
- Tongue at rest in a wrong position
- Lip Licking and Lip sucking
- Wrong chewing pattern
- Nail biting
- Deviate swallow
How does it work?
Waiting until all permanent teeth have come through to begin treatment with braces can unfortunately lead to irreversible damage affecting not only the teeth, but also the child’s overall health and development.
Poor myo-functional habits (poor oral habits) are evident before all permanent teeth are present, which means treatment of the causes can begin much earlier than originally thought. This can be as early as three years of age.
Myobrace® is designed to deal with these incorrect myofunctional habits by teaching children to breathe through their nose, rest the tongue correctly in the roof of the mouth, swallow correctly and continue widening the jaws so they grow to their full and proper size. This results in sufficient room for the teeth, allowing them to come in naturally straight and often without the need for braces.
What does the treatment involve?
In addition to the appliances, the patient education program, known as Myobrace® Activities, is used to further correct the myofunctional habits causing the incorrect dental and jaw development. The Activities are to be performed twice daily in conjunction with wearing the Myobrace® appliance and consist of a series of breathing, tongue, swallowing, lip and cheek exercises.
There are typically four stages of treatment with Myobrace® involving: habit correction, arch development, dental alignment and then retention.
What are the health benefits?
As well as aligning the teeth, jaws and improving facial development, Myobrace® pre-orthodontic treatment can provide additional health benefits by addressing issues relating to airway dysfunction as well as teaching children about good dietary habits, allowing them to reach their full genetic potential.
The Myobrace®System also provides a series of videos that explain to the child the need for a good diet in order to prevent tooth decay, improve jaw development and how it is part of growing straight teeth naturally. This is even more important today where we have tooth decay on the rise due to the high level of added sugar in processed foods and the high level of consumption of empty foods.
What results can you expect?
The goal of The Myobrace®System is to obtain natural development of the jaws and teeth. With good compliance, Myobrace® treatment can offer more than just straighter teeth.
- Straighter teeth
- Correct alignment of the teeth and jaws
- Minimal or no use of braces
- No need for extraction of healthy teeth
- Reduced need for fixed retainers
- Improved facial development
- Improved overall health
- Develop to genetic potential
- Health Benefits
- Addresses airway dysfunction issues
- Reinforces good dietary habits
It is not always possible to achieve all these goals. Success of treatment is heavily dependent on the child’s compliance to Myobrace® treatment, their biological ability to change habits as well as growth patterns. Generally, the earlier treatment is started – the higher the level of success can be achieved. Good compliance allows for the best results in growing children aged 3 – 15 years.
